If you’re a cat owner, you know that sometimes cats can be a bit too rowdy in the litter box, causing litter to spread everywhere. Thankfully, many vacuums today can easily vacuum up kitty litter. But what’s the best vacuum for cat litter?

Not all vacuums are created equal—I once had an upright vacuum that would spit litter particles back out at me. If you’re looking for a quality vacuum for kitty litter, you’ll want a model that offers exceptional sucking power. You may also want a high-efficiency filter to remove litter dust and allergens from the air. Of course, we also all have our preferences regarding the vacuum type (upright vs. stick) and features like cordless or bagless.

I’ve constructed a list of the very best vacuums for kitty litter, from premium options with stellar extras to affordable selections for those on a budget.

5 Reasons Why You May Need A Vacuum For Cat Litter

  1. Litter type: Clay granules can damage a regular vacuum. Hard clay pellets, in particular, can damage the hose and filter of vacuum cleaners. Clumping litter can also get stuck in the vacuum’s hose and adhere to canister walls, making the vacuum challenging to clean.
  2.  Mold: Cat litter, especially plant-based litter, can promote mold growth. HEPA vacuums can eliminate mold spores from the air.
  3.  Dust: High dust litter can clog your vacuum’s filter. You’ll want a vacuum that can handle fine dust.
  4.  Allergies: If you have cat allergies, you may benefit from a vacuum that removes allergy-causing particles.
  5.  Odor: Standard vacuums won’t remove odor. A vacuum using a quality filter can reduce odor from the air, and bagged vacuums can prevent odors from coming from the vacuum itself.

4 Factors To Consider When Buying A Vacuum Cleaner For Cat Litter

1. Filtration

Anti-allergy vacuums often contain special seals or filters that better trap cat litter dust. For example, vacuums with HEPA filtration remove up to 99.99% of particles with a diameter as small as 0.3 microns from the air and prevent them from being returned into the air via the vacuum’s exhaust. A quality filter, in conjunction with a bagged vacuum, provides the ultimate level of support for allergy and asthma sufferers.

2. Wet/Dry Technology

Wet-dry or shop vacuums are designed to clean up more intense messes than your standard household machine. They should be able to handle even wet litter. If your kitty has a tendency to pee outside the litter box, consider a wet-dry steam vacuum, which can kill germs and pests and remove debris and liquid from a variety of surfaces.

3. Bags vs Bagless

Dive into online forums, and you’ll find lively debates on the merits of bagged vs. bagless vacuums. Proponents of the bagged vacuum say it’s better for allergen disposal and reduces the need for vacuum maintenance. If your primary concern is dust, allergens, and messes when emptying your vacuum, consider buying a bagged vacuum with an air filter. With bagged options, once the bag is full, you remove it and dispose of the waste without having to re-expose yourself to dust, pathogens, and other particles your vacuum sucked up.

4. Cord vs Cordless

Corded vacuums typically offer more suction power; however, cordless vacuums offer additional maneuverability that you can’t always get with a corded option. If you’re looking for a handheld to suck up small bits of litter around your kitty’s box, this won’t be as big of an issue. But, if you cat is an expert at tracking litter throughout the house, you may prefer a more powerful option to remove litter from various cracks and crevices.

Best Upright Vacuum

Shark Performance Plus Lift-Away Review

  • Self-cleaning brushroll
  • Odor neutralizer technology
  • Anti-Allergen Complete Seal Technology® & HEPA Filter
  • Self-propelled
  • Reasonably priced

Consider the Shark Performance Plus Lift-Away if you’re looking for an all-around quality upright vacuum that works well for pet litter. This bagless, upright model performs debris pick-up very well on both bare and carpeted floors, especially high-pile carpet.

Standout features include a HEPA filter that locks away 99.9% of dust and allergens, odor-neutralizing cartridges (ocean breeze scented) to guard against foul odors inside your appliance, and a detachable canister unit for floor-to-ceiling. The vacuum also has LED headlights to reveal hidden debris while cleaning and swivel steering for maneuverability.

If you’re also concerned about shedding, the DuoClean Powerfins Hairpro floodhead is another great feature; it’s designed to dig deep into carpets to grip and capture embedded hair and dirt. The unit also includes a pet multi-tool for upholstery, a crevice tool for tight spots, an anti-allergen brush for fine dust in tight crevices, and a HairPro™ Self-Cleaning Pet Power Brush to target stuck-on dirt.

Like most upright vacuums, the somewhat bulky design can make maneuvering tight spots a hassle; however, the manufacturer attempts to remedy this with the detachable canister. To use the Shark Life-Away® technology, step on the vacuum’s pedal to detach the dust canister. The unit essentially transforms into a canister vacuum. While still somewhat bulky, it offers more maneuverability to tight spots around the cat box.

One thing to note about the anti-allergy HEPA filter: This unit effectively traps dust and allergens, but particles can escape the dust bin when emptying it. For ultimate protection, you’ll need to choose a bagged vacuum.

Bissell CleanView Swivel Pet 2252 Review

Bissell CleanView Swivel Pet 2252
  • Triple Action Brush Roll lifts and removes embedded dirt
  • Multi-suction suction system
  • Multi-surface cleaning with scatter-free technology
  • Washable filter
  • Affordable

While the Bissel CleanView Swivel Pet won’t beat the performance of our top pick, it’s still a quality option for pet parents looking for a good litter-collecting vacuum, especially for bare floors and low-pile carpets.

The bagless unit boasts a decently sized dust bin and several tools and brushes for deep cleaning. The TRIPLE ACTION™ Brush Roll performs well at loosening and lifting embedded dirt and pet hair, and you can remove the brush roll to clean it and remove possible hairs tangled around it. Added tools include an extension wand, crevice tool, combination dusting and upholstery tool, and the Pet TurboEraser® Tool for removing debris from carpets, stairs, crevices, and upholstery. This vacuum also has a washable filter for a longer-lasting filtration system.

You won’t find special features, like air filtration, with this unit. The vacuum isn’t allergen-sealed and does not contain a HEPA filter. It also does not have a soft-bristle brush for dusting fine particles. So, if your litter is prone to heavy dust, you might want to choose a different option.

That said, it is a highly affordable option that efficiently picks up debris on various floors.

Every purchase from Bissell also supports homeless pets through the Bissell Pet Foundation. This foundation focuses on addressing the pet overpopulation crisis by offering support to shelters nationwide. Programs are dedicated to adoptions, microchipping, sterilization, vaccinations, and crisis response.

Best Stick Vacuum

Dyson Gen5detect/Gen5detect Absolute Review

Dyson Gen5detect Absolute
  • Reveals invisible dust
  • Display screen shows when your floor is clean
  • Trigger-free power button
  • Three power modes for maximum battery life
  • Wall dock

The Dyson Gen5detect/Gen5detect Absolute has the distinction of being one of the strongest, feature-packed stick vacuums on the market. According to Dyson, this model features advanced suctioning and HEPA filtration, as well as Dyson’s longest runtime from a single battery, thus effectively becoming the brand’s flagship model.

The Gen5detect has many unique features that make it adept at collecting litter box tracking and dust. Its Fluffy Optic™ cleaner head includes a laser light to reveal dust and dirt you wouldn’t usually be able to see on hard floors. The model also features a built-in dirt sensor that counts and measures the debris sucked into the vacuum. The vacuum then displays this information via an LED display on the top of its body. This feature is a super handy tool if you suffer from allergies and want an estimate of allergen quantities in your home.

The vacuum’s fully sealed HEPA filtration system captures 99.9% of microscopic particles as small as 0.1 microns, meaning it can collect viruses, bacteria, mold spores, and other pathogens. (However, remember that emptying the dust bin can release particles back into the air.)

In terms of performance, the Gen5detect is top-tier. It has a fantastic overall cleaning performance, including bare floors, carpeting, and stairs. The automatic power adjustment feature detects the surface being vacuumed and automatically adjusts power based on the type of floor. Despite this, keep in mind that the strong suctioning might cause it to get stuck on shag carpeting.

Finally, the built-in dusting and crevice tool makes collecting dust and litter from around your kitty’s box easy. With the click of a button, the wand detached to reveal a ready-to-go crevice tool perfect for spot cleaning. The Gen5detect also comes with a hair screw tool, combination tool, and wall dock. You can find the Gen5detect on Amazon; for the Gen5detect Absolute, which features a unique color scheme, you must purchase via Dyson’s website.

Best Value Stick Vacuum

Tineco A11 Pet Review

  • 3 power modes
  • 4-stage, fully sealed filtration system
  • LED headlights illuminate the floor ahead
  • Trigger or continuous power mode
  • Wall-mounted dock

Pet-specific vacuum cleaners like the Tineco A11 Pet take into account the extra debris and hair that often accompany having a cat or dog in your home. This cordless stick vacuum is perfect for quickly and easily maneuvering around the litter box to collect debris and dust. It features a four-stage, fully-sealed filtration system with cyclone technology to separate large particles and a HEPA filter that captures 99.9% of dust and allergens down to 0.3 microns.

Tineco does a fantastic job of packing features into this budget-friendly vacuum. It has a surprisingly large dust bin capacity for its size, an LED headlight to illuminate the floor in front of you, and a wall-mount dock for storage.

The A11 Pet also features three power modes, which you can adjust based on the level of suction you require. This feature is great for battery savings (more on that later). The appliance also gives you the option of trigger or continuous power mode. Hold the power button for a quick cleanup, or press and release the power button for extended cleaning without tiring your finger.

The unit performs exceptionally well on hard floors but is also powerful enough to pick up small and large particles on low- to mid-pile carpeting. It also transforms into a handheld vacuum, and you can use the included attachments (crevice tool, dust brush, and mini power brush) for cleaning hard-to-reach places and delicate surfaces.

The Tineco A11 Pet has a limited run time—only 35 minutes—and it takes three hours to charge fully. Its slim design and limited run time make it a better option for apartments and smaller spaces vs. larger homes.

Best Canister Vacuum

Miele Classic C1 Cat & Dog Powerline Review

  • Very strong suction power
  • Adjustable working height (stainless steel telescopic tube)
  • Active AirClean filter for odor control
  • Electrobrush for deep carpet cleaning
  • FilterBag™ change indicator

While not everyone loves a canister vacuum, they’re arguably the best option for cat litter. They tend to have better suction power than other vacuum types and are typically less maintenance since they often use bags. What’s the top canister vacuum for cat litter? Known for its canister vacuums, Miele brand’s Classic C1 Cat & Dog Powerline is the ultimate choice for sucking up cat litter.

This model offers outstanding performance on all floor types, including hardwood, tile, laminate, and carpet. Its 1,200-watt motor makes vacuuming up litter a breeze.

The Miele Classic C1 Cat & Dog Powerline is also a top pick for allergy sufferers thanks to its Active AirClean™ Filtration System with GN AirClean™ 3D Efficiency FilterBag™. The reusable AirClean exhaust filter traps fine dust and allergens from reentering the air through the vacuum’s exhaust (99.95% of 0.5-micron particles and 94% of 0.3-micron particles), and the filter bag automatically closes when the appliance is opened to ensure debris-free bag replacement. The dust bin holds 4.5 quarts, giving it the largest capacity of all the vacuums we’ve reviewed.

Included with the vacuum is a bare floor head, an electrically-driven power head for low to high-pile and plush carpeting, a crevice nozzle, dusting brush with synthetic bristles, and a mini turbo brush for carpets and upholstery.

While this is a fantastic vacuum, there are a few factors that may cause you to turn away from it. First, the canister is heavy—at 21 pounds, it’s one of the heaviest choices in this article. Second, its cord length is only 18 inches, meaning you’ll have to move from plug to plug in larger spaces.

Best Value Canister Vacuum

Airsign HEPA Review

  • Extremely strong suction power
  • HEPA-14 filter with charcoal for odor control
  • Made from 20% recucled plastic
  • Quieter than many competitors
  • Biodegradable bags

The Airsign HEPA vacuum is another super-powerful canister vacuum that is also an excellent option for felines terrified of loud vacuum cleaners. According to Airsign, its tightly sealed gaskets make its canisters perform quieter than competitors.

The minimalistically designed vacuum is shaped like a suitcase and weighs around 11 pounds, making it a compact canister option. It includes a multi-floor head, telescoping wand, brush tool, and crevice tool. The model has three suction pressures to ensure a deep clean on various surfaces.

The Airsign HEPA vacuum has a few other selling points. It uses a HEPA-14 filter with charcoal to filter 99.995% of particles over 0.3 microns. The carbon-activated filter supports the removal of odors, while the HEPA filter removes dust, bacteria, pet dander, and mold. The vacuum also uses bags for a fully sealed system. The bags, called AirBags, are easy to change, include a dust-locking tab, and are made of biodegradable materials.

The appliance has other eco-conscious and sustainability features as well. Airsign made its vacuum from 20% post-consumer recycled plastic. It is made without glue or paint. Airsign also designed it without snap fits, a type of joint that wears down over time and is thus prone to breakage.

Like the Miele canister vacuum, the Airsign HEPA has a 1,200-watt motor for strong suction power, but it is also much less expensive.

Why isn’t the Airsign our top canister pick? There are a few reasons. At around 2.5 quarts, it has a smaller dust bin capacity. It also has an even shorter cord length—a mere 14.6 feet (26.25 ft. operating radius vs. Miele’s 29.5 ft.). The Airsign HEPA also comes with less tools and brushes. Plus, it’s hard to beat the construction quality of Miele—they’re built to last and offer top-of-the-line performance.

Best Handheld Vacuum

Dyson Humdinger Review

  • Two power modes for energy efficiency
  • Wall dock
  • Powerful motor spins up to 105,000rpm to suck up microscopic particles and larger debris
  • Narrow and lightweight
  • 5-layer filtration captures and seals 99.99% of microscopic partlices as small as 0.3 microns

The handheld Dyson Humdinger provides superior suction power in a lightweight, portable package. The vacuum is easy to use and comes with multiple attachments that allow it to switch from cleaning furniture and stairs to spot cleaning in a matter of seconds. It performs very well on bare floors and even high-pile carpets. It’s also easy to maintain and requires no recurring costs (it’s bagless and has a washable HEPA filter).

The Humdinger performs well with both small particles and larger litter pieces. Its 120-watt motor power is very impressive for a vacuum of its size. It has a run time of 25 minutes and takes 3.5 hours to charge.

When you purchase the Dyson Humdinger, you also get three tools: a hairscrew tool, a combination crevice tool, and a worktop tool. The hairscrew tool features an anti-tangle conical brush for collecting pet hair. The crevice tool features a two-in-one narrow nozzle and bristle brush. As its name suggests, Dyson made the worktop tool for hard surfaces, tabletops, and windowsills.

The handheld uses eight cyclones to fling dust into the bin so there’s no suction loss. It also features a washable filter that seals in 99.9% of microscopic particles as small as 0.3 microns.

Besides the limited run time, this handheld has a couple of other cons. There’s no docking station, which is typically expected with Dyson vacuums, and the dust bin is also quite small.

Best Value Handheld Vacuum

Black+Decker Dustbuster Advanced Clean BDH2000L Review

Black+Decker Dustbuster Advanced Clean BDH2000L
  • Large dirt bowl
  • Pivoting nozzle to help reach tight spaces
  • Slim and lightweight
  • Built-in, flip-up brush for fast and easy cleaning
  • Free-standing storage and charging base

If you’re looking for an affordable handheld, consider the ever-popular Black+Decker Dustbuster Advanced Clean. This vacuum is very portable and easy to store. It excels at picking up debris on bare floors and is small enough to maneuver around your kitty’s litter box without trouble.

The box contains the hand vacuum, an extension wand, a pre-filter, a filter, and a charging station with cable. The wand helps reach tight spaces, and it has a built-in hard bristle brush to help with stuck-on messes. You’ll need to replace the cloth filter every six to nine months, but it isn’t too expensive.

Overall, the model has good performance. It’s easy to turn on and off and has good suction. It performs best on bare floors but can also work on carpet—expect to make a couple of passes to clean up small and large debris completely. If you’ve got a shag rug with a lot of debris in it, don’t expect to clean up the mess before this vacuum dies.

According to Black+Decker, a full charge gives you 25 minutes of run time; however, users report that suction depletes around half that time. Still, it’s a reliable handheld that won’t throw dust around and is relatively easy to maintain.

Another factor to mention is the vacuum’s dust bin. Many reviewers say the dirt compartment is too small; however, that’s to be expected with a simple handheld.

Ecovacs Deebot X2 Omni Review

Ecovacs Deebot X2 Omni
  • Vacuum/mop hybrid
  • Hot-water mop washing
  • Pet-friendly AI obstacle avoidance (can detect pet waste)
  • Promises 99.77% cleaning coverage per unit area
  • Built-in voice assistant

The Ecovacs Deebot X2 Omni is a hybrid vacuum/mop that is fantastically self-sufficient and rich with features. It has hot water mop washing, rotating mop pads that lift when carpet is detected, and increased suction power (8000Pa) compared to its predecessors. The Omni Station is fully automated and includes auto-cleaning, auto-refilling of the water tank, auto-empty, auto-drying, and self-maintenance. This robot vacuum is the way to go if you’re looking for a hands-off option. The square-shaped design with built-in edge detection sensors ensures edge-to-edge cleaning—even getting litter in corners.

The X2’s fully integrated AI helps it plan its route and engage in more efficient obstacle avoidance and edge cleaning. It determines the vacuum’s strength and water flow based on the room’s conditions. When the mop is used, the chenille fabric-covered, rotating mop pads provide consistent pressure with hot water to remove floor stains. When carpet is detected, the mopping pads lift to easily transition to vacuum-only. The AI sensor can also detect pet waste and food bowls, making it an excellent option for homes with cats.

The Deebot X2 Omni also uses 3D mapping to clean specific areas, such as tracking around your kitty’s box. To use mapping, open the companion app to view the real-time structure of your home. From there, glide your finger over the targeted area on the companion app, and the X2 will take care of the mess. You can also use the built-in voice assistant to issue commands, schedule cleaning, and more.

While the Ecovacs Deebot X2 Omni is a fantastic robotic vacuum mop, it may occasionally get stuck and, depending on the pile, dampen carpet.

iRobot Roomba j7+ Review

iRobot Roomba j7+
  • Pet waste-avoidance guarantee
  • Empties on its own
  • Bag system traps 99% of pollen and mold
  • Works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant
  • Allows scheduled clean times

If you’re looking for a premium option at a lower price, consider the iRobot Roomba j7+. With iRobots P.O.O.P. guarantee, you can be sure your robot vacuum won’t run over pet waste that makes its way onto the floor.

It uses a built-in camera and machine learning to recognize obstacles in its cleaning path and reroute around them. iRobot’s PrecisionVision Navigation can identify pet waste, phone cords, power cables, towels, and more from images crowdsourced from its customers that contribute images to its database. If it sees a potential obstacle that isn’t in the database, the j7+ snaps a photo and asks where it should avoid that area in the future. This method can create Keep-Out Zones in the regions that disrupt the vacuum’s movement.

The Roomba j7+ collects litter and debris and disposes of it in the Clean Base® Automatic Dirt Disposal bin. The enclosed bags capture 99% of pollen and mold.

The robot has several smart features, including auto-charging, auto-cleaning, voice assistant cleaning, and seasonal cleaning recommendations. It also provides personalized schedule recommendations and pet-shedding cleaning suggestions.

Overall, the robot performs well on various surfaces. It collects debris best on bare floors but can also work on carpets, though reviewers say it may struggle on high-pile carpets. Unfortunately, the vacuum also has an unimpressive battery life.

Tineco Floor One S7 Steam Review

Tineco Floor One S7 Steam
  • 3-in-1 vacuum, mop, and steam
  • Smart LED display
  • 284° F HyperSteam Technology sanitizes and removes grease/stains
  • 2 steam modes
  • Self-cleaning with steam

This three-in-one vacuum, mop, and steamer provides a super deep clean while cutting your cleaning time in half. Not only can it clean up wet messes outside the box, but it also sanitizes floors with 284° F Hypersteam technology. Tineco designed the Floor One S7 Steam to help tackle pet messes safely, eliminating 99.99% of harmful bacteria.

This Tineco model has many great features, including dual-sided edge cleaning, which cleans baseboards and other hard-to-reach spaces without causing messes. The model also features LED headlights, so you can clearly see your cleaning path.

The vacuum’s LCD screen display allows you to choose between cleaning modes. There are four options. Auto mode uses a sensor to automatically detect how dirty the floor is and apply the appropriate amount of water and suction power. Use Steam mode for steam cleaning. Select Boost Steam mode for heavy debris or Suction mode to clean up wet messes.

When vacuuming is over, the multi-step self-cleaning system uses centrifugal drying to eliminate excess water and minimize odors in the appliance. There’s also a scale removal system to prevent scale buildup caused by high temperatures.

You can only use Tineco Floor One S7 Steam on non-carpeted floors, including hardwood, laminate, and tile. It’s not recommended for use on carpets—it can damage the roller.

Bissell CrossWave Pet Pro Review

  • Hybrid vacuum and mop to pick up wet and dry debris
  • Two-tank technology keeps clean and dirty water separate
  • Sold with multi-surface cleaning formula
  • Self-cleaning cycle
  • Purchase supports funding for pet homelessness programs

The Bissell CrossWave Pet Pro hybrid vacuum can be used on laminate, linoleum, tile, wood, vinyl, rubber floor mats, and rugs. It features detergent dispersal and a fluffy, tangle-free roll brush to scrub away dried-on debris. While you can use the Pet Pro on carpet, it has a hard time sucking up large debris on dry surfaces (it performs much better with pet hair).

The box includes the CrossWave Pet Pro, a storage tray, two multi-surface brush rolls, and two eight-ounce multi-surface detergents.

The vacuum is well-built, easy to operate, and works well on stubborn messes. It features two water tanks—the clean tank dispenses water and solution with a pull of the trigger, while the dirty water is suctioned from the floor and stored in a separate dirty water tank. The vacuum is corded to ensure uninterrupted cleaning.

While the CrossWave Pet Pro lacks an allergy-trapping HEPA filter, it effectively cleans pet stains and stuck-on debris. The machine has a self-cleaning cycle to safeguard it from unpleasant odors, though you must purchase the FreshStart™ Clean Out Cycle Formula to utilize this feature.

As with all Bissell products, purchasing this appliance supports the Bissell Pet Foundation, which supports programs to reduce pet homelessness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cat in a teal litter box with pellets.

Here are some frequently asked questions regarding cat litter clean-up. Don’t see yours? Ask us in the comments.

How Do I Vacuum Up Cat Litter Safely?

The most crucial tip for vacuuming cat litter safely is to clean up only dry, unsoiled litter. Wet, soiled particles are most likely to clog the filter and hoses of your vacuum cleaner. If you have a canister vacuum, the wet litter will stick to the sides and be tricky to empty. Don’t try to suck up clumps even if they look dry.

How Do I Reduce The Amount Of Spilled Litter?

The first way to reduce spilled litter is by selecting the right type. View our list of the best non-tracking cat litter for the best options. Second, look at the box itself. Covered boxes, top-entry boxes, and boxes with higher sides can help reduce spilled litter around the box. Finally, consider using a litter mat to help stop tracking. If you need more time to buy a litter mat, you may also use an old towel, bath mat, or rug.

Best Air Purifier For Cat Litter Dust

Along with regular vacuuming, air purifiers can dramatically affect the amount of cat litter particles in the air. View our picks for the best air purifier for cat litter dust, including the best options for dander and odor.
