Let’s face it, your cat is your royal highness. So when their birthday (or adoption day) rolls around, why not throw them a little party, complete with their very own cat-friendly cake?
Table of Contents
These aren’t your average cakes. They’re made with ingredients your kitty will actually eat safely and enjoy (sorry, chocolate and sugar — you’re not invited). Whether you’re celebrating a milestone or just want to treat your cat “just because,” here are some of my favorite feline-approved cake recipes to try!

Can Cats Eat Regular Birthday Cake?
As tempting as it is to share your own birthday cake with your kitty, the answer is a big nope. Human cakes are loaded with sugar, dairy, and other ingredients that can upset your cat’s tummy or worse. So save the chocolate for yourself and whip up a cat-safe version they’ll actually enjoy (and tolerate).
Cat-Friendly Cake Ingredients
When picking out the purr-fect recipe, stick to ingredients your cat already loves and make sure every single one is safe for felines. Some kitty-approved favorites include:
- Meats like chicken, turkey, or beef
- Seafood like tuna or salmon
- Dairy in small amounts (like shredded cheese or plain Greek yogurt)
- Oatmeal, rice, or potatoes as a gentle base
- Cat-safe fruits & veggies like pumpkin, carrots, blueberries, banana, and even watermelon
If the recipe calls for flour, go with rice or oat flour. It’s gentler on sensitive stomachs and a safer choice than wheat for many cats.
Always double-check ingredients before serving, and when in doubt, ask your vet. Safety first, treats second! See our ultimate guide on which human foods cats can and cannot eat.
My Favorite No-Bake “Birthday” Cat Cake Recipe
I’m a mom to three indoor cats who have three main hobbies: napping, trying to sneak bites of human food, and bird watching from the window, like it’s cat Netflix.
Recently, we celebrated a big milestone — Lola and Bammy’s adoption anniversary! These two adorable sisters came into our lives as tiny shelter kittens, and somehow it’s already been seven years.
Lola, my clumsy but endlessly lovable Calico, and Bammy, my white and gray Tabby with the most dramatic facial expressions I’ve ever seen on a cat, definitely deserved a special treat. Of course, their younger brother Monk had to be included, too. He’s almost two now, a brown-and-gray tabby who still has that nonstop kitten energy.
Sure, I could have cracked open a few cans of tuna and called it a day. But where’s the fun in that? When you’re a self-proclaimed cat mom (and maybe just a little over-the-top), you go all out. So I made simple cat birthday cakes.

Okay, let me clarify — this isn’t a fluffy, frosted layer cake. Think more “crab cake” but with tuna, diced chicken, and mashed sweet potato. It’s basically a fishy, meaty masterpiece that only a cat could truly appreciate.
And the verdict? They went wild for it. All three cleaned their plates and then tried to see if anyone had left a bite behind. Honestly, making it was almost as fun as watching them devour it. Totally worth it for the cuteness factor.

It was easy to make, and it felt like a perfect way to mark the day. I’ll definitely be keeping this in the rotation for future celebrations.

No-Bake Cat Cake Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 5-oz can white albacore tuna in water
- 1/2 cup finely diced cooked chicken breast (no skin)
- 1/2 cup sweet potato purée
- 1 Tbsp rice flour (as needed)
- mashed potatoes for frosting (optional)
- catnip (optional)
Instructions
- Cook your sweet potato into the microwave, then mash it up and let it cool.
- While your potato is cooking, open your tuna, drain the water, and add the tuna to a medium bowl. Flake it into tiny pieces.
- Dice your cooked chicken and add to the bowl. I always have cooked chicken in my fridge, so it's an easy mix-in.
- Stir in sweet potato purée a little at a time. You want it to hold together and not be soupy. You may not need the whole ½ cup.
- If your sweet potato is a bit watery, sprinkle in rice flour 1 teaspoon at a time until the texture firms up.
- Place a 1-inch round cookie cutter on a plate, spoon in your mix, and gently press it to the edges or just hand shape into patties.
- For frosting, pipe mashed potatoes using a pastry bag or just dollop a bit on top (optional).

5 More Cat Cake Recipes
I love baking human food whenever I get the chance, and often I’ll whip up cat cakes as a special treat for my feline brood. The following recipes are creations from a colleague, my own concoctions, and some of my favorites I’ve found online.

1. Tuna & Cheese Delight
This recipe is my colleague’s go-to cat cake recipe. “My cats are part of the family, and I believe they should share in special moments with tasty treats,” says Danielle Degroot, writer for Love Your Cat.
“Tuna fish is one of their all-time favorite treats, so when the anniversary of their rescue day comes around, and for special holidays like their birthday or Christmas, I make them a tasty tuna fish cake. Yummy, right?”
“It is a really simple recipe – I use a can of tuna (in water, not oil), an egg white, shredded cheese, and flour. I found this recipe online years ago and have modified it to fit my needs. If I need to make more, I double or triple the recipe.”
Ingredients
- 1 can of tuna in water (drained)
- 1-2 tablespoons shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 egg white
- 1 tablespoon flour
“I sometimes mix in a supplement powder (like pumpkin for healthy poops) or add a little salmon oil and extra flour to punch up that fishy taste.”
Instructions
Mix everything together, then pour it into your treat molds or shape it into mini cake shapes. I use a mini cupcake tin and paper wrappers to ensure they don’t stick to the pan. If you use a regular pan, be sure to use cooking spray or oil to grease it.
Bake at 350 for 10 to 12 minutes; the cakes should look set. Once they cool all the way, your cat can chow down!
“My cats always highly enjoy this treat, as well as the drained tuna water they get while they wait. Of course, the kitchen always needs a good airing out afterwards, as tuna fish cake does not smell as good as the fish-free kind.”
2. Chicken & Pumpkin Mini Cake
This simple, wholesome mini cake is perfect for celebrating your cat’s special day or just treating them to something a little extra. Made with real chicken, pumpkin, and a few cat-safe ingredients, it’s easy to whip up and sure to be a hit with your feline food critic.

4. Baby & Cat Food Birthday Cake
This soft and fluffy birthday cake blends baby food, wet cat food, and pumpkin into a fun, cat-safe treat that’s perfect for a special celebration. With a touch of optional icing and fun pet-friendly decorations, it’s a sweet way to spoil your feline without compromising on their health. Great for layering or serving as a mini single-tier cake.
Baby & Cat Food Birthday Cake
Equipment
- 2 Ramekins (or a muffin tin)
Ingredients
- 1/2 Cup dog-safe frosting*
- 2 liquid cat treats**
Instructions
- In a bowl, stir together the baby food, wet cat food, pumpkin purée, egg yolk, flour, and baking soda until smooth and well combined.
- For a lighter, fluffier texture, whip the egg white separately using a whisk or milk frother until soft peaks form. Without the egg, your cake will be denser.
- Gently fold the whipped egg white into your mixture.
- Lightly coat your ramekins with coconut oil. It’s a safe, cat-friendly option that adds a little flavor and helps prevent sticking.
- Pour the batter into the ramekins and bake at 350°F for 20 to 23 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool before adding any icing. For best results, pop them in the fridge while you prep the decorations.
- Once cooled, stack and decorate the cakes with cat-safe toppings like a small amount of icing, soft treats, or pet-safe sprinkles.
Notes
- * My go-to dog-safe frosting is Magifrost Dog Cake Frosting
- ** I use Tiki Cat Stix to top it all off for a flavorful punch

3 Cat Cake Tips & Safety Notes
Celebrating your cat’s big day should be fun, not followed by a vet visit. Here’s how to keep things safe and stress-free. And remember to always introduce new foods slowly, especially if your cat has a sensitive tummy.

1. Double-Check Ingredients
Even if the recipe is cat-friendly, always read the labels. Avoid onions, garlic, sugar, or artificial sweeteners (especially xylitol).
2. Keep Portions Small
Birthday cake is a treat, not a full meal. Treats should only make up 10% of your cat’s daily calorie intake. Why?
Too many treats on top of full meals can cause kitties to gain weight easily, which can lead to major health problems down the road. Overweight cats are prone to diabetes, heart issues, and many other problems.
- Use rich toppings like yogurt in small amounts
- If the cake is large, start with a small slice
- Save leftovers for the next day (your cat will love a repeat celebration)
3. Think Safety First
Don’t forget the basics:
- Let the cake cool completely before serving
- Avoid decorations that aren’t edible — no plastic figurines or ribbons
- If you use a birthday candle, never leave it lit near your cat, and remove it before serving
A little planning goes a long way. Keep it simple, safe, and celebratory, and your cat’s birthday will be one to remember (for the right reasons).
Want To Throw A Whole Cat Pawty?
Now that you’ve got your cake planned, it’s time to spruce up your kitty party with some extra special love. Pair your cake with:
- A tuna “mocktail” (just tuna water in a fancy dish)
- Streamers and catnip toys
- An adorable birthday outfit like this Frisco Cupcake Party Hat & Ruffle Collar
